Conditions: Strong westerly winds pushed the swell but we anchored in shark alley
where it was not choppy
We are currently dealing with strong westerly winds that are pushing the swell above 3m meaning it was better for us to go to the island as we are sheltered here from the swell. We left Kleinbaai harbor at 10am this morning and anchored in the mouth of shark alley. Conditions were great in the alley mouth as we were protected from the swell by Geyser Rock and Dyer Island. The visibility in the alley was not too bad at roughly 2m. We were very curious to find out what sharks would show up as we have been diving at Joubertsdam for the last few weeks. We were very lucky to spot the first shark after just 25 minutes! It was a 3.8m female with a satellite tag, hopefully we will find out shortly who she is. Amongst one of the seven sharks we sighted on our first trip was a 1.8m shark with kelp hanging out of its mouth. Is this a vegetarian shark? Sharks are very curious animals and often bite at things floating on the surface to find out what it is. This shark probably tried to investigate kelp floating on the surface and got a leaf stuck in between its teeth in the process. On our second trip we took a film crew out that was filming different activities in South Africa for marketing purposes in the UK. As soon as we got on anchor we spotted our first shark, an impressive 4.5m White shark. We also spotted Frownie, 3.2m male that we frequently see in the shallows. His behavior at the island is very different from what we have seen in the shallows. He is usually curious but calm in the shallows. Today at the island Frownie was curious but very active showing us some impressive breaches. We ended up seeing 8 different sharks on our second trip. Apart from the sharks we spotted African penguins swimming towards the island, white chinned petrels, a giant petrel and storm petrels and seals. All in all a marvelous day out at sea!
